Galvanizing Public Support

In the early 1990's, St. Paul was an urban city in economic distress. Downtown had lost half of the value of its taxable property, and businesses were leaving the city at an alarming rate. It was obvious that to restore St. Paul's vitality, city government would need the participation and support of the private sector.

The need for leadership and vision spurred the creation of Capital City Partnership in 1996 to organize and channel the energies and resources of the business and professional community to form effective public/ private partnerships to plan, develop, promote, and market downtown St. Paul.

The partnership began with 16 corporate members and today consists of over 50 of the Twin Cities' largest corporations. The CEO-based Board is supportive of the organization's mission to revitalize St. Paul and is dedicated to taking an active leadership role. This unique attribute of the partnership has mobilized the resources necessary to accomplish our goals.

However, Capital City Partnership is more than a business organization. It is a leading-edge public/private partnership that includes business, government, foundations, higher education, and community development organizations. By working together to align agendas and priorities, and leverage resources, we are able to partner more effectively to revitalize the urban core of our Capital City. We believe that economic development and community development are complementary halves of a quality of life circle in St. Paul.

Today, the membership spans the entire metropolitan area, including such firms as Andersen Corporation and 3M to the east, to all of the major downtown St. Paul employers, to larger Minneapolis and western suburban firms.

Capital City Partnership is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit business membership organization that cultivates private sector leadership and develops and implements programs to enhance downtown St. Paul's business development.

Our Mission

The mission of the Capital City Partnership, having today grown to include over fifty member companies and organizations, is "to focus and channel the energies and resources of the larger corporate community to form effective public private partnerships to revitalize the urban core of the Capital City St. Paul."

Membership Requirements

Each member corporation contributes $25,000 per year to support the Capital City Partnership's work program. The CEO or his/her designee must also agree to serve on the Capital City Partnership Board of Directors.

A Unique Opportunity

What began and continues to be an effort of the large Twin Cities corporate community to revitalize Downtown St. Paul, also presents a unique opportunity to spend an hour and a half with CEOs from around the Twin Cities on a quarterly basis.

A Key Part of St. Paul's Revitalization Efforts

Without the direction and support of the Capital City Partnership, much of what we refer to as the "remarkable Saint Paul renaissance" would either have been greatly delayed, or in some cases may not have happened at all. While much has been accomplished, there is still plenty of work ahead as we look to the changing needs of tomorrow's marketplace. The Capital City Partnership will be there to help St. Paul meet these challenges.
